How do 4-axis milling machines work?

Hermle 4-axis CNC milling machines are based on the same models from Hermle that make up the 3-axis range, with the addition of a rotary table to enable 4-axis machining. As with all Hermle milling centres, the user has a choice between Siemens or Heidenhain controls.

BURKHARDT+WEBER’S heavy machine based machining centres feature high torque spindles with pre-loaded precision ball screws or a high-accuracy rack and pinion drive on all axes. Spindle drives with 4-step automatic gear units up to 80 kW and 3.600 Nm permit effective machining of even difficult materials.

Equipment options include automatic loading via pallet changer for significantly cut set-up times. Each BURKHARDT+WEBER  4-axis machine is supplied with Siemens machine controls.

Applications for 4-axis milling machines

4-axis milling is useful when holes and cut-outs need to be made in the side of a piece or around a cylinder. It can simultaneously perform milling, boring, drilling, turning, reaming, reaming, tapping and other processes on the same machine. Furthermore, most or all of the machining can be completed in a single setup which not only heightens its accuracy, but also improves overall efficiency.

For precision machining, 4-axis can work according to computer numerical inputs which provides quick and efficient machining.

Benefits of 4-axis machining:

  • High level of automation.
  • High speed milling.
  • High security.
  • Simple process.
  • Multiple functions.
  • Automatic tool management.
